An old voice memo or spoken recording may arrive as an .amr file that your usual player will not open. Echora's AMR to MP3 converter creates an MP3 copy of that audio for listening or sharing in an application that accepts MP3.
Upload a file from your device and convert it online for free, without an account, credits, or software installation. The tool changes the audio format; it does not improve the recording or turn the speech into text.
What Is an AMR Recording?
AMR stands for Adaptive Multi-Rate and was designed for compressed speech. Narrowband AMR, or AMR-NB, uses an 8kHz sample rate, as described in the AMR specification. It is distinct from the wideband variant.
This page accepts readable .amr files. MP3 is the output format, but the recording's original limitations still matter. A narrowband voice memo does not gain the detail of a full-band recording when converted.
| What to compare | AMR source | This tool's MP3 copy |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Compact speech recording | Playback or sharing where MP3 is accepted |
| Encoding | Compressed speech, depending on the AMR variant | Lossy MP3 |
| Sound detail | Limited by the recording and its encoding | Missing detail is not restored |
| Channels and sample rate | Depend on the source; AMR-NB recordings are commonly 8kHz mono | Do not assume stereo or a higher sample rate |
When Is AMR to MP3 Useful?
Listen to a voice memo saved on an older phone
Copy the actual .amr recording onto the device you are using, then upload it here. An MP3 copy can help when your preferred player accepts MP3 but not the original recording. This page takes a local file; it does not import a phone backup, an app account, or a recording from a website link.
Share an interview or spoken note for review
You may want someone else to hear a recorded explanation, interview excerpt, or class note. Convert the file, then check that quiet speech and the beginning and end are audible before sending it. MP3 can address the file-format requirement, but it cannot make words clearer if the original recording did not capture them.
Prepare audio for another workflow that requires MP3
An editor, upload form, or transcription service may request MP3 audio. Check that destination's duration and sample-rate requirements before sending the result. This converter supplies an audio file only; any editing or transcription happens separately in the application you choose.
How to Convert AMR to MP3 Online
- Upload one AMR file. Select or drag in a .amr file up to 200MB and 30 minutes long. The input area shows file information, so the browser does not need to play the AMR before you submit it.
- Start the conversion. Wait for the upload to finish, then click the conversion button. MP3 is preset as the output. The service checks that it can read the audio track and that the duration is within the limit.
- Listen and download. When the task completes, preview the MP3 if your browser supports it, download the file, and open it in your intended player.
Each task handles one recording. Upload another file to start a new task. The time required depends on the source, your connection, and service activity; do not assume an input is broken simply because it has no browser preview.
Check the Result's Speech and Audio Properties
The result is a lossy MP3 made with preset settings. There are no controls for bitrate, sample rate, channels, noise reduction, or transcription on this page.
An 8kHz mono recording can still be an 8kHz mono MP3 after conversion. The .mp3 extension does not mean that the file became stereo or acquired the frequency range of a music recording. If the next application requires a particular sample rate, inspect the download before uploading it there.
Listen to the first sentence, a quiet section, and the ending. Compare any unclear words with the source in a player that can open it. Check duration and file size as well; a successful task should still be followed by a quick review of the saved audio.
Will the Voice Sound Clearer in MP3?
AMR is optimized to keep speech compact. If the original sounds telephone-like, noisy, or distorted, those characteristics can remain in the MP3. The conversion adds lossy encoding and cannot recover frequencies or words that were not captured.
A larger file or higher reported bitrate does not prove that the voice has improved. Nor does copying a mono recording into another format create a second, independently recorded channel. Keep the original AMR if you may need to compare a passage or try another export later.
Why Can a Small AMR Still Exceed the Limit?
File size and duration are separate checks. AMR can store long speech recordings in very little space. For example, one hour of encoded audio at an assumed 12.2kbps contains about 5.49MB of data before file and frame overhead. In decimal units: size in MB ≈ bitrate in kbps × seconds ÷ 8000, so 12.2 × 3600 ÷ 8000 = 5.49.
The recording in this example is 60 minutes long and cannot be processed here because the source limit is 30 minutes, even though its size is far below 200MB. This page does not trim the recording for you.
The MP3 can also be larger than its AMR source because it uses different encoding settings. There is no fixed reduction ratio or target-size option. Check the downloaded size before attaching it to a message or submitting it elsewhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the AMR to MP3 converter free?
Yes. No account or credits are required. Each task accepts one .amr file within the 200MB and 30-minute source limits.
Can I rename .amr to .mp3 instead?
No. Renaming does not change the speech encoding. Upload the file with its correct .amr extension so the service can decode it and create an MP3.
Does this page also accept AWB or 3GP files?
No. The input is restricted to .amr files; .awb and .3gp are not accepted here. Renaming does not convert the underlying file, and a .amr extension alone does not guarantee that every internal variant can be decoded.
Why is there no player for my uploaded AMR?
The input displays file information rather than requiring browser playback. That alone does not mean the recording is damaged. After the upload finishes, submit it for the service to check its audio and duration.
Can it remove noise or create a transcript?
No. This page converts AMR audio to MP3 with preset settings. It does not provide noise reduction, speech enhancement, or speech-to-text output.
Why was a tiny AMR rejected?
Check its duration as well as its size. A highly compressed recording may be much smaller than 200MB but longer than 30 minutes. An unsupported variant, damaged content, or incorrect extension can also cause rejection.
What should I check if conversion or playback fails?
Confirm that the original is readable, the upload completed, and both limits are met. Upload it again if the earlier upload expired. If the task succeeds but MP3 preview fails, download the result and test a compatible player before deciding the audio is damaged.
