CAF (max 200MB, max 30min)

Files are processed on our servers, stored temporarily for about 12 hours, then automatically deleted. Please save, copy, or download the results you need promptly.

Use Echora to convert CAF recordings or audio assets to MP3 for listening and sharing. Upload one file, start the conversion, and download the MP3 when it finishes. The tool is free, with no account or software installation required.

What is inside a CAF file?

CAF stands for Core Audio Format. Apple's CAF specification describes a container that can hold audio and supporting metadata. Its extension does not identify one fixed codec.

A .caf extension does not guarantee that every encoding or channel layout can be converted. The file must contain audio the service can decode. PCM and ALAC are useful examples of CAF contents, but they should not be treated as a complete compatibility list.

When a CAF to MP3 conversion helps

Share a recording with someone who needs MP3

You may have a recorded idea, spoken note, or rehearsal exported as CAF while the listener's application asks for MP3. Create a separate copy, then test the download in that application. This changes the delivery format; it does not transcribe the recording or remove background noise.

Send a sound asset for review

An individual sound from an audio project can be easier to review as an MP3 attachment. Export or locate the actual CAF audio file before uploading. The converter accepts that file, not an entire editor project or an archive of assets. Listen to the start and end so the reviewer receives the intended sound.

Retain the CAF for further work

If the source contains editing information you still need, keep it alongside the MP3. A listening copy is useful for feedback, while the source remains available for future edits. For material intended to loop, check the transition in the final project: converting to MP3 does not guarantee a seamless loop or preserved loop instructions.

How to convert a CAF file to MP3

  1. Upload one CAF. Select or drag in a .caf file up to 200MB and 30 minutes. The upload area shows file information; you do not need to make the browser play the CAF first.
  2. Start the conversion. Wait for the upload to finish and start the task. MP3 is already selected. The service checks the audio and duration before processing it with preset encoding settings.
  3. Listen and download. When the task completes, preview the MP3 if supported, then download it. Open the saved copy in the player or application that will use it.

Start with a file that is fully available on your device, rather than a cloud shortcut or a partial download. Processing time depends on the recording and connection. If the service reports an unreadable file, open the original in the application that created it and check whether a fresh export is needed.

What to check in the MP3 result

The downloaded file should have an .mp3 extension and be recognized as MP3 audio. Compare its duration with the recording, listen to quiet sections, and check the channel balance. Do not assume that complex channel arrangements or individual regions have been exported exactly as an editor would handle them.

The tool uses a preset 192kbps bitrate setting. Actual output properties can differ with source sample rate and encoder constraints, so use the downloaded file's properties when checking a delivery requirement. There are no controls for bitrate, sample rate, channels, region selection, or audio editing.

Check any title or tags you depend on separately. The audio track being playable does not mean CAF markers, regions, or other project-related information has survived as usable MP3 metadata. Keep the source for work that relies on those details.

Does CAF to MP3 conversion lose quality?

MP3 uses lossy compression. If the CAF contains uncompressed PCM or lossless ALAC, the MP3 will be a lossy listening copy. If the source already contains lossy audio, creating an MP3 adds another encoding pass. Neither case can guarantee the same decoded samples as the source.

Compare the files at similar listening levels through the same equipment. Speech endings, soft ambience, long notes, and sharp transients are useful places to listen. A higher bitrate or sample-rate display cannot restore missing frequencies or repair clipped and noisy sound.

Use the best source available for the final conversion, and retain it if you expect more editing. Repeatedly converting the MP3 back to CAF will not recover the original recording's precision or editing information.

Why file size and duration need separate checks

CAF size depends on its internal encoding. A PCM CAF may be much larger than an MP3 copy, while an already compressed CAF can produce a smaller or larger result with the preset settings. The tool does not promise a fixed reduction or provide a target-size control.

A small file can also contain a long recording. For example, 31 minutes of 8kHz, 16-bit mono PCM contains about 29.76MB of audio data: 8,000 samples/second × 2 bytes/sample × 1,860 seconds, using decimal MB and excluding headers. That is below the size limit but beyond 30 minutes, so it is still too long for this tool. This is a calculation, not a conversion measurement.

Check both limits before uploading. A larger source cannot bypass the 200MB limit because its eventual MP3 might be smaller, and missing browser playback does not remove the server's duration check. Split or re-export an appropriate excerpt separately when necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this CAF to MP3 converter free?

Yes. It does not require an account or credits. Each task processes one .caf file up to 200MB and 30 minutes; it does not accept a batch of files.

Can I convert a CAF that my browser cannot preview?

Yes, you can try converting without playing the CAF in your browser. The upload area shows file information; a missing player does not mean the file is damaged. Conversion still depends on whether the service can read the audio and whether the file meets the 200MB and 30-minute upload limits.

Does every file with a .caf extension work?

No. CAF can contain different codecs, and unsupported or damaged audio may fail. Upload the actual CAF file and check that the original can be read by the application that produced it.

Is converting PCM or ALAC CAF to MP3 lossless?

No. MP3 is lossy even when the CAF source contains PCM or ALAC. Keep the original if exact preservation is needed, and use the MP3 as a listening or delivery copy.

Will markers, regions, and loop information be preserved?

Complete transfer is not guaranteed. The tool creates MP3 audio, not a copy of an editor's project structure. Retain the CAF and verify any timing or loop behavior in the destination project.

Can I change the bitrate or select a region?

No. The page uses preset encoding settings and provides no bitrate, sample-rate, channel, or region selector. Prepare the desired excerpt before uploading if you only need part of a recording.

Can I rename .caf to .mp3 instead?

No. Renaming changes only the filename. The container and audio need to be decoded and encoded into MP3 for the result to be a valid converted file.
