MP3 (max 200MB, max 30min)

Files are processed on our servers, stored temporarily for about 12 hours, then automatically deleted. Please save, copy, or download the results you need promptly.

Use this MP3 to WMA converter when a recipient, device, or existing project specifically needs WMA audio. Upload one MP3, start conversion, and download the WMA when it finishes. The tool is free, with no account or software installation required.

The output is WMA Standard audio in a .wma file. Converting MP3 to WMA involves another lossy encoding step; it cannot recover detail already removed from the MP3. This page does not produce WMA Professional or WMA Lossless files.

What changes when you convert MP3 to WMA?

This tool decodes the MP3 and encodes the audio as Windows Media Audio 2, also identified as wmav2. It saves that audio in an ASF container with a .wma extension. Microsoft's ASF overview explains the distinction between the container and the audio it carries.

Renaming recording.mp3 to recording.wma changes the filename, not the audio encoding or file structure. A player that expects WMA needs a compatible encoded file. Conversely, if the receiving application already accepts your MP3, a conversion may add no useful benefit.

When a WMA copy is useful

Deliver audio in a requested format

A recipient may specifically ask for WMA alongside other project assets. Confirm that WMA Standard is acceptable and check any requirements for bitrate, sample rate, and channels. This page uses a preset; it cannot satisfy a delivery specification that requires a different WMA version or custom settings.

Use a device with confirmed WMA support

An existing player or audio device may accept WMA files. Check its documentation for the actual encoding and supported parameters, then try a representative file on that device. The word “WMA” in a supported-format list does not guarantee every WMA file will play correctly.

Add a copy to an older project

If an older workflow expects WMA assets, create a separate copy while keeping the MP3 original. Open the converted file in the project and check its beginning, ending, and placement. Conversion does not ensure gapless transitions or preserve every application-specific setting associated with the source.

How to convert MP3 to WMA online

  1. Upload one MP3. Choose or drag in a .mp3 file up to 200MB and 30 minutes. Use a file that has finished recording, exporting, or downloading.
  2. Start conversion. Wait for the upload to finish, then start the task. WMA is already selected, and the tool uses its preset encoding settings.
  3. Download and check the WMA. The completed result appears as a file with a download button. Save it and listen in the application or device that needs WMA.

The page handles one file per task. It does not offer batch uploads, playlist import, or conversion from a pasted webpage or sharing link. For another recording, select its local file and start a separate conversion.

Does converting MP3 to WMA improve sound quality?

No. The MP3 has already undergone lossy compression. Encoding that decoded sound as WMA Standard can introduce further differences; it cannot reconstruct the original recording before MP3 compression. The conversion does not remove noise, repair clipping or distortion, or restore missing speech.

The preset target is 192kbps, with no manual bitrate, sample-rate, channel, or quality controls. A 192kbps WMA made from a lower-bitrate MP3 does not gain the detail that was discarded earlier. Likewise, matching sample rates or channel counts does not prove that the decoded audio samples are identical.

For a useful comparison, listen at similar playback volume. Check sustained notes, speech consonants, quiet sections, and the start and end of the recording. Keep the MP3 as your source instead of repeatedly converting between lossy formats. If you have a higher-quality original, preserve it for future work.

Why the WMA file may be larger or smaller

Duration and actual average bitrate are major factors in compressed audio size. The source MP3 bitrate may be below or above the WMA preset, so conversion does not guarantee a smaller download. ASF headers, packet structure, and metadata also contribute to the total file size.

For a seven-minute recording, audio averaging 192kbps would occupy about 10.08MB before container overhead. At 128kbps, the same duration would occupy about 6.72MB. These are arithmetic examples using decimal MB, not measured conversion results or selectable settings.

The formula is audio data size (MB) ≈ average bitrate (kbps) × duration (seconds) ÷ 8000, excluding container overhead. Actual downloaded size includes additional data, whose share can be more noticeable in short clips. The 200MB limit applies to the uploaded file; it is not a promise about output size or a target-size control.

If upload or playback does not work

Check that you selected a complete MP3 file and that both the size and duration fit the limits. If the page reports that it cannot read the duration, try opening the MP3 in a suitable player and exporting a complete file from the original application. A valid extension alone does not prove the audio is readable.

A completed WMA result uses a download card because browser support for WMA playback is limited. The absence of an inline player does not mean conversion failed. Download the file and check it in the intended software; a successful conversion still cannot guarantee compatibility with every device.

If the target application rejects it, check whether it expects WMA Standard or a different variant, then compare the result's sample rate, channels, and bitrate with its requirements. Also check the displayed title, tags, and artwork: conversion does not guarantee that every MP3 metadata field will transfer correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Is this MP3 to WMA converter free?

Yes. It is free to use without an account or credits. Each task processes one MP3 file, with an upload limit of 200MB and a duration limit of 30 minutes. Batch upload is not available.

Can I convert MP3 to WMA without losing quality?

This tool encodes the MP3 again using lossy WMA Standard. It cannot guarantee identical decoded samples, improve the original recording, or restore information lost during MP3 compression. Keep the source file for future use.

Does the tool create WMA Lossless or WMA Pro?

No. It creates WMA Standard using the Windows Media Audio 2 codec (wmav2), in an ASF container with a .wma extension. WMA Lossless and WMA Professional are not output options on this page.

How do I listen to the converted WMA?

Download it from the completed file card and open it in a player or device that supports the result's WMA encoding and parameters. This page provides a file download instead of an inline WMA player.

Can I choose the bitrate or sample rate?

No. The converter uses a preset 192kbps target and does not expose bitrate, sample-rate, channel, or quality settings. Check the downloaded file against any specific delivery requirements.

Why did my WMA become larger than the MP3?

The MP3 may have a lower average bitrate than the WMA output, and the ASF container adds its own overhead. A larger file does not mean lost sound detail has returned. Compare the actual download sizes rather than expecting a fixed reduction.

Will tags and album artwork be preserved?

Complete preservation is not guaranteed. Tags and artwork are separate from the audio, and their handling can differ between MP3, WMA, and the receiving application. Check the downloaded file if those details matter to your project.
