Use this WAV to AAC converter to make a compressed audio copy for a player, project, or recipient that accepts standalone .aac files. Upload one WAV, start conversion, and download the AAC when it finishes. The tool is free, with no account or software installation required.
The output is lossy AAC-LC in an ADTS file. A PCM WAV does not remain lossless after AAC encoding, even if the downloaded file sounds close to the source. Keep the WAV if you will need its original samples or higher precision later.
WAV input and AAC output: what changes?
WAV is a file format, not a guarantee of one audio encoding. Common recordings use integer PCM, while some exports use floating-point PCM or compressed audio. Microsoft's wave-format documentation distinguishes these data formats. The actual audio must be readable by the conversion service.
| Property | WAV input | This tool's AAC output |
|---|---|---|
| Extension | .wav | .aac |
| Audio encoding | Depends on the file; PCM is common | AAC-LC |
| File structure | WAVE audio and associated chunks | AAC audio in ADTS frames |
| Compression | Uncompressed for PCM; other encodings vary | Lossy compression |
| Precision | May use 16-bit, 24-bit, or floating-point PCM | Does not preserve all original PCM samples |
| Main purpose here | Editing source or original recording | Compressed copy for a compatible destination |
AAC is the codec and ADTS is its framing format here. The FFmpeg ADTS documentation describes a format carrying one AAC stream. This page produces .aac, not M4A. Check whether the destination accepts standalone AAC instead of assuming that support for AAC inside MP4 is enough.
When converting WAV to AAC helps
Import a standalone AAC file into a project
A project may request an AAC or ADTS audio asset. Convert a copy of your WAV and test it in that project. Check sample rate, channel count, channel layout, and duration against the import requirements. Matching the extension alone does not establish compatibility.
Share a recording for listening or review
An uncompressed WAV can be large when you only need a listening copy. AAC often reduces its size, provided the recipient can open the resulting file. Listen to representative passages and check the actual download size before sending it. Use the WAV for later editing.
Check an export from an audio editor
After exporting a recording or mix as WAV, you can create an AAC copy to test in the receiving application. Start with one representative file. If the recipient already accepts the WAV and does not need a smaller copy, another lossy conversion may be unnecessary.
How to convert WAV to AAC online
- Upload one WAV. Select or drag in a complete
.wavfile up to 200MB and 30 minutes. Wait until recording, exporting, or downloading has finished before uploading it. - Start conversion. Wait for the upload to finish and start the task. AAC is already selected, with preset encoding parameters.
- Listen and download. Preview the AAC if your browser supports it, then download the
.aacand open it in the intended player or project.
The page handles one file per task. It does not import an entire editing project, a folder, a playlist, or a webpage link. Export the individual audio file first; batch upload and automatic splitting are not available.
What happens to quality and encoding settings?
Encoding PCM as AAC discards some audio information. A 24-bit or floating-point WAV therefore does not retain all its original precision. If the WAV already contains lossy audio, conversion adds another encoding step and cannot recover what was lost earlier.
The service uses AAC-LC with a 192kbps bitrate target. Actual average bitrate depends on the source and can differ from that target, especially at low sample rates or with short material. The page does not offer HE-AAC, lossless output, or manual bitrate, quality, sample-rate, channel, and bit-depth controls.
Compare at a similar playback volume. Listen to sustained notes, sharp attacks, quiet passages, and the start and end of the recording. The converter does not remove noise, repair clipping, normalize the mix, or restore missing sound. A higher displayed bitrate or sample rate is not proof of improved audio.
Keep the WAV for further exports. Converting AAC back to WAV stores the decoded AAC audio but does not reverse the loss. AAC encoding introduces encoder delay and can add trailing padding. How an application handles these extra samples can affect where playback starts and ends. For loops or audio-video synchronization, check transitions and alignment in the destination application.
How much smaller will the AAC be?
There is no fixed reduction ratio. An uncompressed PCM source will often become smaller, but WAV can also contain compressed or low-data-rate audio. Duration, source encoding, actual AAC bitrate, headers, and metadata all affect the comparison.
For uncompressed PCM, audio data size (MB) = sample rate (Hz) × channel count × bytes per sample per channel × duration (seconds) ÷ 1,000,000. For five minutes of 48kHz stereo, 24-bit PCM, each sample occupies 3 bytes per channel: 48000 × 2 × 3 × 300 ÷ 1,000,000 = 86.40MB.
For AAC, audio data size (MB) ≈ average bitrate (kbps) × duration (seconds) ÷ 8000. For the same duration at an average 192kbps, the estimate is 192 × 300 ÷ 8000 = 7.20MB.
These are decimal-MB calculations excluding WAVE chunks, ADTS frame headers, and other overhead. They are not measured results, available settings, or a promised output size. Check the downloaded file against the recipient's limit.
The input must meet both limits before conversion. A high-sample-rate or higher-bit-depth WAV can exceed 200MB while still being shorter than 30 minutes. Expecting a smaller AAC does not increase the permitted upload size.
If uploading, conversion, or playback fails
If the page cannot read the WAV's duration, check the file in the application that created it and confirm that its export is complete. Another browser may help with input-reading problems. Not every WAV encoding is handled identically by every browser or decoder.
If conversion fails, check the actual audio properties and whether the original application can export a complete, suitable copy. Renaming another file to .wav changes only its name, not its encoding or structure. The service must be able to read an audio track within the limits.
If the task finishes but the AAC will not play in the browser, download it and try a player that accepts standalone ADTS AAC. After import, check duration and channels. Inspect labels, cue markers, artwork, and timing information separately; complete transfer of WAV-specific metadata is not guaranteed.
Frequently asked questions
Is this WAV to AAC converter free?
Yes. No account or credits are required. Each task handles one WAV up to 200MB and 30 minutes. Batch upload, project import, and automatic splitting of longer recordings are not available.
Does WAV to AAC conversion preserve all the original audio?
No. AAC uses lossy compression, so PCM samples are not preserved exactly. This applies to 16-bit, 24-bit, and floating-point sources. Similar playback does not make the conversion lossless; keep the WAV for exact preservation or later editing.
Is the result a standalone AAC file or an M4A?
It is AAC-LC audio in an ADTS file with an .aac extension. This page does not produce M4A or provide a container selector. Check that the destination accepts standalone AAC.
Can I choose the bitrate, sample rate, or quality?
No. The page uses a preset 192kbps target, without manual bitrate, quality, sample-rate, channel, or bit-depth controls. Actual average bitrate and size can vary; the preset is not an exact output guarantee.
Will every WAV become smaller?
No. Uncompressed PCM often becomes smaller, but source encoding, duration, actual bitrate, and file overhead matter. Check the downloaded size instead of expecting a fixed percentage reduction.
What if the WAV or the AAC cannot be previewed?
If an input-duration error blocks upload, check the WAV in a compatible application and try another browser. If conversion has completed, download the AAC and use a player that supports standalone ADTS AAC. Input reading and output playback are separate checks.
Will cue markers and other WAV metadata transfer?
Complete transfer is not guaranteed. Verify the downloaded file in the destination application, particularly if the workflow relies on markers, labels, artwork, or timing information. The tool creates an audio copy; it does not migrate an editing project.
