Use this WMA to WAV converter to prepare audio for an editor or recipient that requests PCM WAV. Upload one .wma file and download the WAV once conversion finishes. The tool is free and requires no account or software installation.
The output is uncompressed 16-bit PCM WAV. It can make a recording usable in a WAV-based workflow, but it cannot restore sound detail discarded by a lossy WMA encoding. Confirm that 16-bit output meets your needs before converting.
WMA and WAV: what is the difference?
WMA is a family of audio encodings, including Standard, Professional, and Lossless, as shown in Microsoft's WMA documentation. WAV is a container; this tool specifically writes signed 16-bit little-endian PCM, not another compressed codec inside WAV.
| Property | WMA input | This tool's WAV output |
|---|---|---|
| Extension | .wma | .wav |
| Audio encoding | Depends on the WMA file | Signed 16-bit PCM (pcm_s16le) |
| Compression | Often lossy; WMA Lossless also exists | Uncompressed PCM |
| Bit depth and precision | WMA bitrate does not reveal the original recording's PCM bit depth | Fixed 16-bit samples |
| Page preview | File information; input playback is not required | WAV playback when supported, plus download |
| Size depends on | Encoding, bitrate, content, and duration | Sample rate, channels, and duration |
The .wma extension alone does not establish which encoding is inside or whether it can be decoded. This page accepts WMA files, but it does not promise support for every WMA variant or protected recording. Renaming a file does not change its contents or guarantee compatibility.
When converting WMA to WAV helps
Bring a recording into an editor
An older recording may be stored as WMA while an editing project expects PCM assets. Convert a copy, import it, and check the timing and channel balance before editing. If the editor already reads the WMA correctly, an intermediate conversion may not be necessary.
Meet a 16-bit PCM delivery requirement
A recipient may request WAV as part of a handoff. Confirm the required bit depth, sample rate, and channel layout first. This tool's 16-bit output is unsuitable for a specification that explicitly requires 24-bit or floating-point audio, even though all of those files can have a .wav extension.
Make an older recording easier to review
A WAV copy can suit a listening or annotation application that does not accept your WMA. Check the whole recording, including quiet passages and the last few seconds. The tool changes the format; it does not transcribe speech, remove noise, or repair damaged audio.
How to convert a WMA file to WAV online
- Upload one WMA. Select or drag in a
.wmafile up to 200MB and 30 minutes. The upload area shows file information; the browser does not need to play the input first. - Start conversion. After upload finishes, start the task. WAV is already selected. The service checks the audio and duration before returning a completed result.
- Check and download the WAV. Preview it if your browser supports playback, then download the file and open it in the intended editor or player.
Use a file whose recording, export, or download has finished. The page processes one file per task and has no batch-upload, playlist, or URL-import option. Having a small file does not override the duration limit: long, heavily compressed recordings can still exceed 30 minutes.
Does WMA to WAV restore the original quality?
For a lossy WMA source, decoding to PCM does not restore information removed by compression. The WAV stores the decoded audio without another lossy output codec, but that does not make it the original recording from before WMA encoding. Conversion does not remove background noise, repair clipping distortion, or restore missing speech.
WMA Lossless requires a different qualification: even when a file can be decoded, this page still writes 16-bit PCM. A higher-bit-depth source cannot rely on this conversion to preserve all its original precision. Keep the original when exact preservation or further editing matters.
The page offers no manual bit-depth, sample-rate, channel, or dither settings. Matching sample rates and channel counts is useful to check, but it does not by itself establish identical audio samples. Listen at similar volume and review the actual file properties before delivering the result.
Why WAV files can take more space
PCM stores audio samples without compression, so it usually needs more space. Estimate using audio data size (MB) ≈ sample rate (Hz) × channel count × bytes per sample per channel × duration (seconds) ÷ 1,000,000. Each 16-bit PCM sample occupies 2 bytes per channel; the formula excludes file headers and metadata.
For three minutes at 44.1kHz, 16-bit stereo PCM contains 31.752MB, or about 31.75MB, of audio data. Mono contains 15.876MB, or about 15.88MB. These examples use decimal MB and exclude file headers and metadata; they are calculations, not measurements or selectable conversion settings.
The source WMA size depends on its encoding and actual bitrate, so there is no fixed expansion ratio. A larger WAV does not establish higher recording quality. The 200MB limit applies to the input, and the output can exceed that size; check the receiving application's storage or upload requirements separately.
If a WMA cannot be converted or previewed
Seeing file information instead of an input player is expected on this page. WMA conversion does not depend on browser playback. The service must still be able to read an audio stream and confirm that the recording fits the duration limit.
If conversion fails, check that the file is complete, plays in its original application, and is not restricted by DRM. This tool does not remove copy protection or unlock files. A damaged file or unsupported encoding may fail even when its name ends in .wma.
This page accepts .wma files. Changing .asf or another extension to .wma does not change the content or guarantee that upload and decoding requirements are met. If needed, export a complete audio file from the original application using an available, authorized export option.
When conversion succeeds but a player rejects the WAV, try the intended editing application and inspect the downloaded file's properties. Check duration, channel count and layout, and the beginning and end of the audio. Tags and artwork may be handled differently after conversion, so verify them separately if they matter.
Frequently asked questions
Is WMA to WAV conversion free?
Yes. No account or credits are needed. Each task accepts one WMA file up to 200MB and 30 minutes. The page does not provide batch uploads or automatic splitting of longer recordings.
Does a larger WAV sound better than the WMA?
Not necessarily. Uncompressed PCM usually needs more space, but it cannot restore detail removed by lossy WMA compression. File size alone does not prove better sound quality or a lossless recording source.
Does this tool produce 16-bit or 24-bit WAV?
It produces uncompressed, signed 16-bit little-endian PCM WAV. There is no 24-bit or floating-point output option. If the source has higher precision, including a compatible WMA Lossless file, the fixed 16-bit output cannot guarantee full preservation of that precision.
Can I convert WMA if my browser cannot play it?
Yes, browser playback of the WMA input is not required. The upload area shows file information, and the service checks the actual audio and duration. Conversion still depends on a readable, supported file within the limits.
Are all WMA formats and protected files supported?
No universal compatibility is promised. WMA files can contain different encodings or access restrictions, and the service must be able to decode the audio. This tool does not remove DRM or unlock protected recordings.
Can I change the sample rate, channels, or bit depth?
No. This page uses preset conversion settings and fixed 16-bit PCM output. It has no manual sample-rate, channel, bit-depth, or dither controls, so check the downloaded file against your project's requirements.
Will titles, tags, and artwork transfer to the WAV?
Complete metadata preservation is not guaranteed. WAV and the receiving application may handle these fields differently from WMA. Inspect the downloaded file and keep the original if those details are needed for your library or project.
