Need searchable or copyable text from an ebook? This free EPUB to TXT converter extracts readable text from EPUB 2 and EPUB 3 files and turns it into a UTF-8 TXT result. It follows the book's declared reading order, so you get a cleaner result than converting chapters by ZIP filename. No account or credits are required.

Why Convert EPUB to a Text File?

EPUB is designed for ebook readers: it can contain navigation, styling, images, fonts, and reflowable layouts. TXT is simpler, but that simplicity makes the text easy to search, copy, open in almost any editor, and move into an authorized note-taking or accessibility workflow.

Converting EPUB to plain text is useful when you need the words rather than the original presentation. Keep the EPUB as the source copy when layout, illustrations, page context, or publishing metadata matters; the TXT is a working version, not a replacement for the book.

How to Convert EPUB to TXT Online

  1. Upload an EPUB. Drag one .epub file into the upload area or choose it from your device.
  2. Choose the reading scope. The main reading sequence is included by default. Turn on supplementary content if you also need navigation, footnotes, answer keys, or other auxiliary sections.
  3. Extract the text. Select Create and wait for the EPUB-to-text task to finish.
  4. Copy or download the result. Review the character and chapter counts, then copy the text or download a UTF-8 TXT file.

How EPUB Text Extraction Keeps Chapters in Order

An EPUB is a ZIP-based publication, but its filenames do not reliably show chapter order. This EPUB to text converter reads the package document and follows its spine, which is the reading sequence defined by the publisher.

Entries marked linear="no" and the navigation document are skipped by default to avoid mixing notes or a repeated table of contents into the main text. Enable Include notes and supplementary content to include those entries in their original spine position.

Chapter titles come from the EPUB 3 navigation document or EPUB 2 NCX, then the document title, then the first body heading. A title is not added twice when the chapter already starts with it, and the converter never invents labels such as “Chapter 1.” The displayed chapter count is the number of selected spine content documents, which may not exactly match the publisher's visible chapter count.

What the EPUB to Plain Text Result Keeps

The TXT output keeps:

  • readable Unicode text and decoded HTML entities;
  • chapter and section order from the spine;
  • paragraph and line boundaries;
  • list items and basic table-cell separation.

Plain text does not keep fonts, colors, columns, CSS layout, scripts, embedded media, reader annotations, or cover design. Link labels remain as text, but URLs are not appended.

This tool extracts text already stored in XHTML, HTML, or SVG content. It does not run OCR on scanned pages, illustrations, or comics, and it does not translate, summarize, or rewrite the ebook.

Useful Ways to Use Extracted EPUB Text

  • Search a publication quickly. Find names, terms, or passages with an ordinary text search.
  • Prepare notes and research material. Copy authorized passages into a note system, while checking quotations and context against the original ebook.
  • Move text into compatible tools. Open the UTF-8 file in a text editor or another workflow that accepts plain text.
  • Support accessible reading. Use extractable passages with accessibility software or send a shorter excerpt to Echora Text to Speech.

Only use text from publications you own or have permission to process. Converting the file does not change its copyright or license.

Tips for a Cleaner EPUB-to-Text Result

  1. Check the source in an authorized reader first. If you cannot select any text and every page is an image, this converter will not be able to extract it.
  2. Start with the main reading sequence. Leave supplementary content off for a cleaner first result, then run the file again with the option enabled if you need notes or answer sections.
  3. Use the chapter count as a document count. EPUB publishers split books differently, so compare the extracted headings with the original table of contents when structure matters.
  4. Review the truncation status. Download the result promptly and check the original publication when you need text beyond the retained 50,000 characters.

EPUB Support and Limits

Upload one EPUB at a time, up to 50MB. The service validates the EPUB mimetype, package document, manifest, spine, and internal paths. A normal ZIP renamed to .epub, a damaged publication, missing resources, unsafe paths, or encrypted text is rejected. The tool does not remove or bypass DRM.

Each result contains up to 50,000 characters. Longer books are marked as truncated, and the downloaded TXT contains only the retained text. The result card can send the first 5,000 characters to Echora Text to Speech.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this EPUB to TXT converter free?

Yes. You can convert one supported EPUB at a time without signing in or using credits.

Does it support EPUB 2 and EPUB 3?

Yes. It extracts supported text content from both versions and follows the reading order declared in the EPUB spine.

Can I include footnotes and supplementary chapters?

Yes. Enable Include notes and supplementary content before creating the task. It is disabled by default to keep the main reading text cleaner.

Can it extract text from a DRM-protected or scanned EPUB?

No. Encrypted text is rejected, and image-only pages do not contain text the converter can extract. The tool neither bypasses DRM nor performs OCR.

Why is my EPUB-to-text result incomplete?

The publication may contain image-only pages, missing or unsupported content, or more than 50,000 extractable characters. The result shows when the length limit caused truncation.
